Welcome to the large-scale geodynamics group at UIUC!
We are interested in the dynamic evolution of the solid Earth, and the following word cloud provides a summary on our research. In practice, we attempt to understand Earth’s physical processes using geodynamic modeling approaches that include both sequential (forward) and variational (inverse) data assimilation methods. More information about our work could be found in CV_Liu.pdf.
Research topics
- Landscape response to tectonic forcing and constraints on deep Earth dynamics
- Mechanisms for orogenic deformation, basin evolution and intra-plate volcanism
- Subduction zone processes, slab deformation and formation of deep earthquakes
- Thermal and compositional nature of Earth’s deep mantle and lithosphere
- Using seismic and magnetotelluric imaging to quantify lithosphere and mantle dynamics
- Reconstructing the past states of mantle structure using time-reserval convection models
